Juigalpa is the provincial capital of Chontales Department in central Nicaragua. The city covers 1,037 sq km (400.4 sq mi) and has a population of 71,000 (2011 estimate). It is located in a valley in the Amerrisque Mountains, about 117 m (383 ft) above sea level.

Juigalpa dates back to 1659 when Jeronimo Villegas requested from Spanish government representative Sebastian Alvarez for land to establish the town. The town was officially founded in 1668. It was made the department capital in 1877, and it gained city status in 1879.
