Kaiserslautern, Germany

Kaiserslautern is a small city in the state of Rhineland-Palatinate, in southwestern Germany. Located at the edge of the Palatinate Forest (Pfälzer Wald), it covers 140 sq km (53 sq mi) and has a population of 99,000 people (2012 estimate). The city is a major NATO military base with some 50,000 military personnel station here and in the surrounding district.

Human habitation in the Kaiserlautern area goes back to around 800 BC with the discovery of prehistoric Celtic tombs in Miesau, about 29 km west of Kaiserlautern. The city itself traces its history to a hunting retreat of Holy Roman Emperor Frederick Barbarossa in the 12th century.

Today Kaiserlautern has a developed economy centered on information and communications technology. It is also home to a well known university and technical college.

How to go to Kaiserslautern

You can take the Inter-City Express high-speed train from

Frankfurt to Kaiserlautern. The journey takes 1½ hours and costs €32. The S-Bahn also connects it with Heidelberg (1¼ hours) and Mannheim (1 hour).
