Stendal, Germany

Stendalis a town in the state of Saxony-Anhalt, Germany. It is regarded as the unofficial capital of the Altmark region which covers a third of northern Saxony-Anhalt. The town covers 268 sq km (103 sq mi) and has a population of 42,000 people (2012 estimate).

Stendal is regarded as the Cradle of Prussia, as Otto von Bismarck was born in Schönhausen near here. The town was first mentioned as Steinedal in 1022. It was the possession of the Saint Michael’s Abbey of

Hildesheim. It was an early member of the Hanseatic League, joining it as early as 1160.

After the Napoleonic Wars, Stendal became part of the Prussian Province of Saxony, and after the Second World War, it was within East Germany until the reunification in 1990.

Magdeburg and can be reached from there by taking Highway 189 heading north.
