Stendal is regarded as the Cradle of Prussia, as Otto von Bismarck was born in Schönhausen near here. The town was first mentioned as Steinedal in 1022. It was the possession of the Saint Michael’s Abbey of
Hildesheim. It was an early member of the Hanseatic League, joining it as early as 1160.
After the Napoleonic Wars, Stendal became part of the Prussian Province of Saxony, and after the Second World War, it was within East Germany until the reunification in 1990.

Stendal is located to the north of
Magdeburg and can be reached from there by taking Highway 189 heading north.
